Accompany menstruation naturally - how to use essential oils as a support
Guest post by Sarah Oliviera:
Not much is left of honoring the menstrual cycle in our Western world these days. In many ancient cultures things looked very different. Menstruation was seen as something spiritual, sometimes even sacred. A time when menstruating people were believed to have a special spiritual power because of its association with the phases of the moon and because it is part of a process that enables us to give birth.
For many menstruating menstruators, the period of accompanied by a variety of ailments. Physically, but also mentally. Because in many circles menstruation is seen as something to be kept secret, something we cannot talk about freely. Maybe not all of us realize what that can do to you. But it is clear that if we 'have to' hide a very natural part of ourselves, then it has a big impact consciously or unconsciously .
Essential Oils
I would like to introduce you to essential oils that can accompany you on a physical and mental level in this special phase of your cycle. Here you will find tips on how to use these powerful plant essences to relieve physical ailments such as cramps and rituals with essential oils that strengthen the connection to yourself and your body in this phase of the moon.
Period shaming - what does that do to you?
Thinking that periods are something we should hide or conceal does consciously and subconsciously something to us . Platforms like nevernot that support period normalization are so important to our society.
Equally important is that all menstruators take action themselves and begin to embrace and honor this part of the cycle. The process starts with us and I want to show you how you can support it with small rituals and natural helpers.
Fatigue & loss of energy
Peppermint - Wild Orange
Many menstruators feel tired and drained during their period . There are many reasons for this, it can be an iron deficiency, it can be the hormones or cramps. Peppermint Essential Oil + Wild Orange can be a great help here.

Peppermint has an energizing and refreshing effect. Wild Orange can uplift mood and has a calming effect.
bloating
Peppermint - Fennel - Bergamot or ZenGest doTerra Oil Blend

Mix about 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil or almond oil with a drop each of peppermint, fennel and bergamot and massage into your stomach. You can repeat this several times a day.
Alternatively, you can use doTerra's proprietary essential oil blend, which is great for bloating. To do this, mix 2-3 drops of ZenGest with about 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil or almond oil and massage it into your stomach. In addition, you can put a drop of ZenGest in a glass of warm water (note this only applies to doTerra's oils as the quality is so high. You must not take most other essential oils).

Mood swings
Clary Sage - bergamot - ylang ylang - lavender
Mood swings occur in some menstruators, especially in the days before their period. Of course you can already work with this mixture. This mixture and the application described below is not only good for mood swings, but also in general to support inner balance
I also recommend preparing a small roll-on here so that you always have the mixture ready and easy in your bag.
10ml Roll On Recipe:
20 drops bergamot
10 drops ylang ylang10 drops lavender
5 drops Clary Sage
Tip: combine this application with a reciprocal breathing exercise. If you don't know them yet, just look it up on the internet —> alternating breathing exercise or Nadi Shodhana. This has a balancing effect. In combination with the essential oils, this is super effective.
Honour Your Body Ritual
Grapefruit - patchouli - incense
Patchouli stands for embodiment, it has a grounding and stabilizing effect, supports connection and focus and works balancing on our nervous system. Grapefruit is the oil of body honor and promotes body acceptance and honoring one's body. Frankincense supports the connection to ourselves, to our inner world and also has a stress-relieving effect.
Your honor-your-body ritual:
Mix 2 drops of grapefruit, 2 drops of frankincense and 1 drop of patchouli with about 2 teaspoons Fractionated Coconut Oil or Almond Oil.
Then apply some of this mixture to your solar plexus, heart area (along the sternum) and neck area.
Afterward, inhale the scent of your hands for a few deep breaths and repeat one of the following Affirmations while inhaling: I love and accept my body. I am present in the here and now. I respect and honor my body. I am thankful for my body. My body is perfect the way it is.
Remain seated for a few minutes, put your hands on your legs and feel. Take this information and feel into your body.
If you have a diffuser, I recommend the following mix. You can just let it run on the side or if you consciously do something for yourself, for example while you are in the bath, apply lotion to your body, jog or do sports:
3 drops of grapefruit
2 drops of incense
1 drop of patchouli
I hope you enjoy this oil mixture. It's really exciting what we can move within ourselves with natural essences, intention and calmness
Love,
Sarah
